Why study at HTOS? First-hand experience with liturgics.

How did most of our bishops, priests, and deacons learn the complex liturgics of the Orthodox Church? The answer is that they were seminarians at Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary. Studying at Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary offers each seminarian the unique opportunity to participate daily in the full cycle of services.

Every morning students attend the Liturgy and hear the Troparia, Epistle, and Gospel for the day. Students quickly begin to realize that feast days have before and after feasts. Orthodoxy is not just a religion for Saturday night and Sunday morning.

At Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary, students are assigned to lead the services every day. Students study liturgics in class and then have the opportunity to practice those liturgics every day on kliros. Two students compile the daily Vespers and Matins services and sing and read them in Holy Trinity Cathedral. Students are also assigned to read the Epistle every day. Regardless of whether a student can read Slavonic or English, he is assigned to practice preparing the Epistle for the day and reading it during a weekday Liturgy.

Besides participating on kliros, students are required to serve in the altar. This provides the opportunity for students to observe deacons, priests, and bishops prepare and celebrate the services of the Church. Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary provides its students ample opportunities to practice serving with bishops. Metropolitan Hilarion, Archbishop Gabriel, Bishop Nicholas, and Bishop Jerome often visit Holy Trinity Monastery. It is not unusual to even have many bishops serve together.

Students at Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary do not just read the services of the Church but they actively attend and participate in the full liturgical life of the Church. Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary is deeply intertwined with the life of Holy Trinity Monastery and provides students the opportunity to experience the true richness, and depth of the Holy Orthodox Church which cannot be found by only attending class.
