Holy Trinity Seminary Welcomes Rev. Demetrios Harper, Ph.D to our faculty

Rev. Demetrios Harper, Ph.D, is Holy Trinity Seminary's newest faculty member, hired as Assistant Professor of Church History and Moral Theology. Although occupying that position, Fr. Demetrios' talents are much more far-reaching, including Byzantine & contemporary philosophy, patristics and dogmatics. Therefore, the Holy Trinity community is thankful to God for this addition.

With a bachelor's degree in literary theory, a master's in theology, an interdisciplinary doctorate in theology/philosophy/religious studies, Fr. Demetrios moved beyond his academic training to be ordained in Novo-Diveevo in 2008. He served in Greece from then until 2018, when he continued his academic work as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Notre Dame.

Fr. Demetrios' current research interest is self-determination in Byzantium, which will culminate in a monograph.
Other than this work-in-progress, Fr. Demetrios has recently written an exposition of St. Maximus the Confessor's ethics, Analogy of Love, published by St. Vladimir's Press this year. Not only does this book provide a deep, scholarly study of an important aspect in St. Maximus' philosophy, it also develops a framework through which to critique modern philosophy, especially in relation to Immanuel Kant. Fr. Demetrios was also an editor and co-founder of Analogia: The Pemptousia Journal of Theological Studies.

This year, Fr. Demetrios will be teaching M.Div. classes in Ethics, Church History, and Ecclesiology and B.Th. classes in New Testament and Greek.

Fr. Demetrios looks forward to teaching those who are preparing for a life in traditional Orthodox ministry and helping with the HTS endeavor to provide them with a clear exposition of the precepts of the Faith.

Fr Demetrios has recently re-located to upstate New York together with his wife, Matushka Marina and their daughter Emilia. He is also wont to go hiking in the Adirondacks.
