On Monday, July 8, His Grace, Bishop Jerome (Shaw), arrived at Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY, to celebrate Divine Liturgy and officiate the funeral of Archpriest George Larin (HTOS Alumnus Class '67), pastor emeritus of that parish and one-time diocesan secretary, who reposed in the Lord on July 5.
After Liturgy, Bishop Jerome delivered a eulogy, in which he spoke about his first memory of Fr. George: his ordination to the priesthood by then-Bishop Laurus at Jordanville in 1969. At the time, Bishop Jerome was a seminarian and served as one of the subdeacons, which enabled him to be the first person to receive Fr. George’s priestly blessing. Following this, the Funeral Rite for a Priest began.
After the singing of "Memory Eternal," eulogies were offered by Fr. Elias Gorsky, Fr. Dimitri Temidis, and Fr. Andrew Podymow. More words of fond recollection were spoken at the memorial repast that followed.
That evening, the casket was carried out of the church to the singing of the Trisagion, and was taken away for the trip to Jordanville and the burial service the following day. A number of parishioners also set out for the final part of the exequies.
On Tuesday morning, July 9, His Grace Luke, Bishop of Syracuse, officiated the services and burial at Holy Trinity Monastery. The eulogy at the gravesite was delivered by Archpriest Victor Potapov.
